Below are 5 easy tips for keeping your windows sparkling clean!

Use the right tools.

Most people’s window-cleaning arsenal consists of some windex, an old newspaper and maybe some paper towel. These materials, however, might not be your best option. Squeegees and microfibre cleaning cloths actually get the job done much better than the aforementioned products.

Many people don’t realize just how effectively squeegees clean glass compared to paper towel and old newspapers. The suction that a squeegee creates means that you leave less liquid and grime behind and are able to cover more surface area with every stroke.

Rub around.

The main flaw with cleaning your windows with paper products is that as you rub the cleaning solution around, what you really inevitably end up doing is spreading more dirt around. If you insist on your paper to clean your windows, make sure you you are running through a fresh, clean surface with every pass you make. It can mean the difference between actually cleaning a window or redistributing dirt.

Get your technique down.

It might seem simple enough, but cleaning your windows without using the proper technique is not really cleaning them at all. Make sure whatever cleaning motion you decide to go with you keep consistent throughout the cleaning process. Starting horizontally and moving to vertical swipes and strokes is a great way to end up with streaky windows when it is all said and done.

Stick to a regular cleaning schedule.

The longer you leave your windows, the more dirt and grime builds up, the more the sun bakes it on and the harder it is to remove. If you keep to a set schedule for window cleaning, the task will be much easier every time you do it. Follow the above 5 tips and keep your windows crystal clear all year long.

In addition, to the simple steps above is the trick on how to achieve streak free clean windows. I’m sure this will be another great idea to take note of. Continue reading below.

To get windows to sparkle, it is all about following the process and having the right tools. Here are some tips to simplify things.

Avoid the Sun

If possible, try not to clean the windows while they are in the direct sunlight. The sun makes windows dry faster. Seems like a good idea, right? Actually, it is the rapid drying that makes the streaks appear. For optimal results, glass should dry on its own. Therefore, waiting until the evening or a cloudy day to clean windows may make more sense.

Use Distilled Water

Type of water you use to clean your house does not usually make a difference, but when washing windows, it does. If you have hard water, the minerals will cause spots and streaks to appear. That is why using distilled water may be a good idea if you want the cleanest-looking windows.

Create a Vinegar Solution

There are many household staples that perform multiple functions and vinegar is one of them. Vinegar works great for cleaning windows. Create a 50/50 mixture with distilled water and vinegar and you have got a powerful cleaner. Just spray it or wipe it on as usual and you are good to go. One thing to be aware of is that vinegar does have a strong smell, so you may want to keep the fans on and the windows open.

Wipe it Away the Right Way

If you have streaky windows, it may not be because of your cleaner, but because of what you are using to wipe off the cleaner. Many people use paper towels, but these are a huge no-no. They leave lint streaks that can make it hard to see out of your windows. Newspaper works best, but squeegees with smooth edges and microfiber cloths also do a great job.

Many people are fairly stuck in their ways when it comes to cleaning and may not realize that some of the methods they are employing are actually doing more harm than good. If you are unsure whether or not your cleaning style is costing you extra work or actually making things less clean, here are 5 cleaning mistakes you will want to avoid.

Scrubbing spills out of the carpet. Most people when they spill that glass of wine or cranberry juice on their beautiful carpet immediately run for the rag and the club soda and begin scrubbing away. However, this is highly counterproductive. Scrubbing carpets actually begins to unravel the carpet fibres and ingrains the stain in even further, causing permanent damage.

The best course of action is to remove any surface liquid with a spoon, blot the area dry with some white paper towel or a cloth that won’t bleed and once dry, apply a stain remove to the area.

Solution: Remove the liquid with a spoon, dab the area dry with a towel or cloth, then apply a stain removal solution to the affected area.

Your best bet is to work on a cloudy day or a day when the temperatures won’t cause liquids to dry up quickly.

You’ve gone lemon juice and vinegar crazy. While organic cleaning is all the rage and lemon juice and vinegar certainly have their purposes, many people equate organic with less damage, but that’s not entirely accurate. Lemon juice and vinegar are both acids and are quite capable of damaging natural surfaces, like onyx, marble, limestone and travertine. If applied too liberally or not properly wiped down it can permanently dull the appearance of stone.

Solution: Choose a day that isn’t too sunny or dry. You don’t want redoing your work so choose your day wisely.

Deodorizing the garbage disposal with coffee grounds. If you have a garbage disposal, it is necessary to deodorize it as bacteria and food particles that become trapped over time will start to smell bad. While many garbage disposal manufacturers say it’s fine to put coffee grounds into the grinder, not giving the grinding mechanism a thorough rinsing afterwards can lead to the ground actually clogging the machinery which can lead to smelly, non-functioning machinery.

Solution: When using coffee grounds, be 100% sure that you are able to rinse them out of the disposal machine. If you aren’t that pedantic in doing so, just use a commercial scent spray that can ease of the smell.

The wrong tools for the wrong jobs.Using the wrong tool for the wrong job is usually the biggest problem within the context of kitchen cleaning. For example, the common green-backed cleaning sponge is great for the bottom of heavy-duty pots and pans or the grill, but will wreak havoc on plastic, ceramic and laminate. White-backed sponges, however, are much more gentle.

Overlooking utensil and equipment coatings

Mistake: To save up on money, most people keep on using utensils and equipment even if the interior coatings are already falling off. This is a big mistake because without these coatings, your health is being put at risk. The shield that divides your food and utensil is being put away, and your body gets to intake chemical particles that are deemed unsafe for you. Any amount of cleaning will never be helpful when this is the problem.

Solution: Throw away utensils and equipment that are being stripped off their interior coating. Remember, health and safety first!

Keeping everything dark indoors

Mistake: It is understandable that privacy is important. However, dark spaces can be breeding grounds of bacteria, rodents and insects that can only thrive in dark areas. Dark spaces also cause you to overlook dirt that may have accumulated through the years.

Solution: Be sure to keep the sunshine in whenever possible. Even in the attic or the basement, make efforts to let natural light in.  There are a variety of options you can choose from. Also, make sure your indoor spaces not only get sunshine, but sufficient fresh air as well. Your space and health will thank you for it.

Straying away from greenery indoors

Mistake: Most people get afraid of insects and all the housekeeping that have to go with keeping plants indoors. So, they end up keeping an office—not a home!

Solution: There are thousands of plants to choose from which can be grown and maintained indoors. Plants are very beneficial to the environment and to your health—they supply you with oxygen, take in the carbon dioxide, and leave your home with a fresh, clean feel.
